In Genesis, what was Noah’s age when the Flood began?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah was 600 years old when the Flood began.

Genesis 7:6 states that Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came upon the Earth. The chapter then gives a more specific calendar reference, saying the Flood began in Noah’s six-hundredth year, on the seventeenth day of the second month.

The number can be confused with other ages in the surrounding genealogy. Genesis says Noah was 500 when his sons were born, and Genesis 9:28 says he lived 350 years after the Flood, dying at 950. Those figures describe different stages of his life.

The age is part of Genesis’s chronological framework, which links the Flood to Noah’s life and to earlier generations. It is not the age of the Ark, the duration of the rain, or the time Noah spent inside the vessel. Those are separate details in the account.
