In Genesis, what was Noah doing when he first planted a vineyard after the Flood?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah was farming the soil when he planted a vineyard after the Flood.

Genesis 9:20 describes Noah as a man of the soil and says that he planted a vineyard. The next verses recount that he drank wine, became drunk, and lay uncovered inside his tent. This episode occurs after Noah, his family, and the animals leave the ark.

The passage is sometimes reduced to the vineyard alone, but the opening description supplies an occupational detail: Noah is presented as a cultivator of the ground. That wording connects his post-Flood life with the restoration of agriculture and settled human activity.

The story also introduces a family incident involving Ham and Noah’s other sons, Shem and Japheth. It should not be confused with the earlier account of Noah building the ark or offering sacrifices. The vineyard belongs to the narrative after the covenant sign of the rainbow.
