In Genesis, what is the name of Noah's son who is the ancestor of Canaan?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Ham is Noah's son identified as the ancestor of Canaan.

Genesis 9:18 names Noah's three sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth, then identifies Ham as the father of Canaan. Genesis 10 expands the family table, listing Canaan among Ham's descendants alongside Cush, Mizraim, and Put. The genealogy connects the Flood story to the nations and peoples described in the following chapter.

Ham is also involved in an episode after the Flood in which Noah becomes drunk and lies uncovered in his tent. The passage concerns Ham's actions and Noah's response involving Canaan. It does not say that Ham himself is cursed, a distinction important because later interpretations sometimes misstate the text.

Shem, Ham, and Japheth are all presented as founders of post-Flood family lines. Their genealogies are part of Genesis's larger effort to explain how the peoples of the known world fit into one family history.
