In Genesis, Canaan is the grandson of Noah whose father is Ham.
Genesis 10:6 lists Canaan among Ham’s sons, alongside Cush, Mizraim, and Put. This makes Canaan Noah’s grandson, not one of Noah’s three sons. Noah’s sons are Shem, Ham, and Japheth, a distinction central to the family genealogies following the Flood.
Canaan’s name is also connected with the land of Canaan and the peoples discussed throughout the Hebrew Bible. The genealogical entry is separate from the earlier Ark passenger list: Genesis says Noah, his sons, their wives, and the animals enter the Ark, but it does not describe Canaan as an independent passenger. Later traditions sometimes combine different episodes and generations, so identifying Canaan as Ham’s son is the precise biblical relationship.
