In Genesis, what is the ark’s first named destination after the floodwaters recede?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 says that the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month. The wording is plural: it does not name a single peak called Mount Ararat. It identifies a mountainous region associated with Ararat.

Ararat was an ancient kingdom and geographical area generally connected with the Armenian Highland. The modern volcanic peak Mount Ararat, in eastern Turkey, later became the most famous candidate in popular searches for the ark, but Genesis does not explicitly say that the vessel rested on that particular summit.

This detail also differs from the Quranic account, which names al-Judi. Reports of ark remains on Ararat have circulated for centuries, but no discovery has been scientifically accepted as the biblical ark. The geographic wording in Genesis is therefore more cautious than many modern illustrations and headlines suggest.
