In Genesis, what height was specified for Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark was specified to be 30 cubits high.

Genesis 6:15 gives this height as the third part of a compact set of dimensions: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Since the ancient cubit did not have one universally fixed value, the height cannot be converted into one certain modern figure. Common estimates put it at roughly 13 to 14 metres, or around 45 feet.

The ark’s height is notable because Genesis also says it had three levels. The passage does not state that each level had identical height, and it does not give a detailed internal plan. Interpretations and visual reconstructions therefore vary considerably.

A frequent mix-up is swapping the height and width: both numbers appear in the same verse, but the height is 30 cubits and the width is 50 cubits. The length is much greater at 300 cubits.
