In Genesis, what happened to the Ark on the seventeenth day of the seventh month?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month.

Genesis 8:4 gives the date and says that the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The wording refers to a mountainous region or range rather than naming one specific peak. This is why the biblical text does not identify Mount Ararat as the Ark’s exact landing site.

The phrase is often simplified in popular retellings to “Mount Ararat.” The modern Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey became strongly associated with the story, but Genesis itself uses the plural “mountains” and does not provide coordinates or a single summit.

The Ark did not immediately become accessible after resting. Genesis continues with Noah waiting for the waters to recede, sending out birds, and remaining aboard until God tells him to leave.
