In Genesis, what feature did Noah place in the ark’s roof?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah placed a window in the ark’s roof.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make a tsohar, commonly translated in English as a window or opening, in the ark. The verse also mentions completing the ark to a cubit above and placing a door in its side. Translation traditions differ over some details of the Hebrew wording, but “window” is the standard concise answer.

The roof opening later becomes important in the story. After the waters recede, Noah opens the ark’s window and sends out a raven. He then sends a dove on repeated tests to discover whether the ground has dried. The opening therefore functions both as ventilation or light and as a way to observe conditions outside.

Genesis does not describe a chimney, lookout tower, or modern glass skylight. Illustrations frequently give the ark elaborate windows and roof structures, but the text itself supplies only a brief architectural description. The story also names a separate door on the ark’s side.
