In Genesis, what did Noah open to look out from the Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah opened a window in the Ark to look out after the Flood waters receded.

Genesis 8:6 says that after forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the Ark. He then sent out the raven and later the dove to learn whether the waters had diminished from the earth. The window is one of the vessel’s specific structural features in the biblical account.

Genesis 6:16 had already instructed Noah to make a window near the top of the Ark and to finish the vessel with a door in its side. English translations vary slightly in how they render some architectural terms, but “window” is the standard answer for the opening Noah opened in chapter 8.

The window should not be confused with the Ark’s door. The door is associated with entering and leaving the vessel, while the window is used for observation and releasing birds. This distinction helps explain the sequence of events after the rain stopped.
