In Genesis, what did Noah do when he learned the ground was dry?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah removed the Ark’s covering when he learned that the ground was dry.

Genesis 8:13 says that in the six hundred and first year of Noah’s life, on the first day of the first month, the waters had dried from the earth. Noah then removed the covering of the Ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. He did not yet leave; God later instructed him to go out with his family and the animals.

This detail is easy to miss because the dove’s flights are more familiar. The narrative distinguishes between seeing dry ground through the opened covering and receiving the command to disembark. Genesis 8:14 then states that the earth was completely dry on the twenty-seventh day of the second month.

The sequence therefore includes observation, divine instruction, and departure rather than an immediate exit after the first sign of dryness.
