In Genesis, what did Noah do immediately after leaving the Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah built an altar immediately after leaving the Ark.

Genesis 8:20 says that Noah built an altar to the Lord after he, his family, and the animals came out of the Ark. He then took some of every clean animal and every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. The passage presents this act as the first recorded event after the Ark’s occupants reached dry land.

The altar is part of the narrative’s transition from survival to covenant. After the offering, Genesis says that God blessed Noah and his sons, commanded them to multiply, and established the covenant symbolized by the rainbow. The story therefore moves from the end of the Flood to a new relationship between God, humanity, and living creatures.

A common mix-up is Noah’s later vineyard, which appears in Genesis 9:20 after the covenant material. Planting a vineyard was not his first recorded action after leaving the Ark; building the altar was.
