In Genesis, what age is Noah when the Flood begins?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah is 600 years old when the Flood begins. Genesis 7:6 states his age as the narrative introduces the rising waters.

The account also gives Noah’s age at other points. Genesis 5:32 says he becomes the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth at age 500, while Genesis 9:28 says he lives 350 years after the Flood and dies at 950. These figures belong to the genealogical chronology of Genesis.

Noah’s age is therefore not the same as the time needed to build the Ark or the duration of the Flood. Genesis does not state how many years construction takes. Popular stories sometimes add a fixed construction schedule, but the biblical text gives Noah’s age and the Flood timeline separately.
