In Genesis, on which day of the seventh month did the Ark come to rest?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Ark came to rest on the seventeenth day of the seventh month.

Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on that date. The wording refers to a mountain region or range associated with Ararat, rather than naming the modern peak commonly called Mount Ararat.

The biblical chronology uses numbered months and days. Genesis also describes the waters decreasing after the Ark rested, followed by the appearance of mountain tops and later stages in which Noah sends out birds to test whether the ground has dried.

The date is distinct from other Flood dates in Genesis, including the beginning of the rain and Noah’s eventual departure from the Ark. Confusing these milestones is common because the narrative presents them in a continuous sequence. The text gives the resting date precisely but does not establish a modern calendar equivalent.
