In Genesis, on which day of the seventh month did Noah’s Ark rest on the mountains of Ararat?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the 17th day of the seventh month.

Genesis 8:4 gives this exact date after describing the recession of the Flood waters. The date is part of a carefully narrated chronology that includes the beginning of the Flood in Noah’s six-hundredth year, the period of prevailing waters, and the eventual emergence of the mountain tops. The passage does not name a modern calendar system, so the date should be retained in its biblical form.

This detail is often confused with other dates in the account, including the first day of the tenth month, when the mountain tops became visible. Those are separate milestones: the Ark rests on the mountains in the seventh month, while the mountain tops are seen later. Genesis therefore supplies both a landing date and a later visibility date.
