In Genesis, on which day did the mountain tops become visible after the Flood?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the mountain tops became visible on the first day of the tenth month after the Flood began.

Genesis 8:5 says that the waters continued to decrease until the tops of the mountains were seen on the first day of the tenth month. This date comes after the Ark is said to have rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month.

The two dates describe different stages of the recession. The Ark’s resting does not mean that all surrounding mountains were already visible; Genesis explicitly places the appearance of the mountain tops later. Noah then waits and uses birds to test whether the land is ready for departure.

This detail is easy to confuse with the seventh-month date or with the forty-day period associated with the rain. It belongs to the narrative’s month-by-month chronology, whose exact modern calendar conversion is not supplied by the text.
