In Genesis, on what type of land did Noah’s Ark come to rest?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat. Genesis 8:4 uses the plural phrase “mountains of Ararat” rather than naming a single peak.

Ararat was an ancient region associated with Urartu in the Armenian highlands. The biblical wording does not say that the ark landed on the summit of the modern, singular Mount Ararat. That mountain became the best-known traditional location in later interpretation and popular culture.

This distinction matters because “Mount Ararat” is a common shorthand, while the Genesis text says “mountains of Ararat.” No archaeological discovery has been verified as Noah’s Ark, and proposed expeditions have not established the biblical vessel’s location. The geographical reference in Genesis is therefore more cautious than many modern retellings.
