In Genesis, on what did Noah’s ark come to rest after the Flood waters receded?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 8:4 says that the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The wording is plural: it identifies a mountainous region rather than naming one particular summit. This is why “Mount Ararat” is a familiar but less precise rendering of the biblical location.

The historical region called Ararat is associated with Urartu, an ancient kingdom centered around parts of the Armenian Highlands. Modern Mount Ararat, in eastern Turkey, became the best-known traditional candidate for ark searches, but no confirmed archaeological evidence has established the ark’s location.

The text does not say that the vessel rested on the peak of modern Mount Ararat. It says “the mountains of Ararat,” making that phrase the most precise answer supported by Genesis.
