In Genesis, Noah left the Ark on the 27th day of the second month after the Flood.
Genesis 8:14–19 says that the earth was dry by the 27th day of the second month, and God then told Noah to leave the Ark with his family and the animals. Noah had previously received other dated instructions, including the Flood’s beginning and the Ark’s resting, so the narrative uses a detailed chronological framework.
This date is easy to confuse with the 17th day of the second month, when Genesis says the Flood began in Noah’s six-hundredth year. The same month-and-day system is also used when the Ark rests and when the mountain tops become visible. The final departure therefore comes considerably later than the initial arrival of the waters. After leaving, Noah builds an altar and offers burnt offerings, leading into the covenant scene in Genesis 9.
