In Genesis, on what date did the Flood begin during Noah’s 600th year?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Flood began on the 17th day of the second month of Noah’s 600th year. Genesis 7:11 says that on that date the fountains of the deep opened and the windows of heaven were opened.

The date is part of Genesis’s unusually detailed chronology. The text identifies Noah’s age, the month, and the day rather than simply saying that the Flood began in his old age.

Genesis uses several additional dates to mark the Flood narrative. The waters prevailed for 150 days, and the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat on the 17th day of the seventh month. Later, the ground was dry by the 27th day of the second month of Noah’s 601st year.

These dates are sometimes blended together in retellings. The 17th day of the second month marks the beginning of the Flood, not the ark’s resting place or the end of the story.
