In Genesis, on what date did Noah leave the Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah left the Ark on the 27th day of the second month.

Genesis 8:14–19 says that by this date the earth was dry, and God told Noah to leave the Ark with his family and the animals. Noah’s departure is the narrative’s final movement from survival inside the vessel to renewed life on land.

The date belongs to Genesis’s detailed Flood chronology. Earlier dates identify the beginning of the rain, the Ark’s resting on the mountains of Ararat, and the exposure of the mountain peaks. These markers show that the story distinguishes the start of drying from the point at which the ground is dry enough to leave.

The date should not be confused with the 17th day of the second month, when the Flood begins in the chronology. Nor is it the date when the Ark first comes to rest, which Genesis places in the seventh month.
