In Genesis, how old was Noah when he left the Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah was 601 years old when he left the Ark.

Genesis 8:13 says that in the first month of Noah’s 601st year, the waters had dried from the earth and Noah removed the covering of the Ark. He did not leave at that moment, however. Genesis then says God commanded Noah to come out with his family and the animals after the ground was dry.

This age is part of the chronology of the Flood narrative. Genesis 7:6 states that Noah was 600 years old when the Flood came upon the earth, while Genesis 8:13 places his departure during his 601st year. The two figures refer to different points in the same sequence.

Genesis later gives Noah’s total lifespan as 950 years. That later number is often confused with his age at the Flood or at the Ark’s departure, but it describes the length of his life, not the Flood chronology.
