In Genesis, how many stories high was Noah's Ark?

In Genesis, Noah's Ark was three stories high, or three decks in many English translations.

Genesis 6:16 gives the ark a lower, second, and third deck. The same verse also describes a window or opening near the top and an entrance in the side. These details present the ark as a large, enclosed structure divided vertically into levels.

The biblical measurements are given in cubits, and the exact length of a cubit varied across historical cultures. Genesis specifies a length of 300 cubits, a width of 50 cubits, and a height of 30 cubits. Because the cubit's modern equivalent is uncertain, estimates of the ark's dimensions vary.

Popular pictures often show a boat with several visible masts or a single open deck, but those features are not supplied by Genesis. The explicit structural detail is its three levels, waterproof coating, compartments, and side entrance.
