In Genesis, how many stories did the Ark have?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark had three stories, or levels.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make the Ark with a lower, second, and third deck. The wording describes a three-level structure inside the vessel, alongside a roof and a side opening. This is one of the text’s few direct architectural specifications and is distinct from later artistic reconstructions of the Ark.

The biblical measurements are given in cubits: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Because the exact length of a biblical cubit is uncertain, modern estimates of the Ark’s dimensions vary. The three-story count, however, does not depend on converting cubits into modern units.

The Ark is described as a large box-like vessel rather than a ship designed for navigation. Genesis emphasizes its capacity, waterproofing, and survival role, but it does not provide a detailed engineering plan for stairways, compartments, or the arrangement of animals on each level.
