In Genesis, how many people left Noah’s Ark after the Flood?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, eight people left Noah’s Ark after the Flood.

The eight are Noah, his wife, Noah’s three sons, and the three wives of those sons. Genesis 8:16–18 commands Noah, his family, and the animals to leave the Ark. Earlier, Genesis 7:13 names the same human group entering it: Noah, Shem, Ham, Japheth, Noah’s wife, and the three sons’ wives.

The number is distinct from the wording in the New Testament. First Peter 3:20 also refers to eight people being saved through water, but the question here concerns the Genesis narrative itself. The count does not include animals, whose numbers vary according to whether they are classified as clean or unclean.

Noah’s wife is not given a personal name in Genesis, and the wives of Shem, Ham, and Japheth are likewise unnamed there. That does not change the total. The account presents the eight human survivors as the family group through whom the post-Flood population continues.
