In Genesis, how many people are said to have survived the Flood aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, eight people are said to have survived the Flood aboard Noah’s Ark.

Genesis identifies Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the wives of those three sons as the ark’s human occupants. Together, this makes eight people. The number is also echoed in the New Testament, where 1 Peter refers to “eight souls” being saved through the Flood.

This count concerns people, not animals. Genesis separately describes the animals brought aboard, and different passages within Genesis give differing details about how many animals of each kind were taken. The human total, however, is conventionally counted from the named family members and their wives.
