In Genesis, how many pairs of each kind of unclean animal enter Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, one pair of each kind of unclean animal enters Noah’s Ark.

Genesis 7 says that animals enter the Ark in male-and-female pairs. The passage distinguishes between clean animals and animals that are not clean: Noah takes seven pairs of each kind of clean animal, but one pair of each kind of unclean animal. The distinction is important because the story does not simply say that every animal enters in identical numbers.

The clean-animal instruction is connected in the narrative with sacrifice. After leaving the Ark, Noah builds an altar and offers burnt offerings from some of the clean animals and birds. This helps explain why the text gives a larger number for clean animals.

Readers often remember the simplified phrase “two of every animal.” That summary captures the pair idea but leaves out Genesis’s separate instructions for clean animals. The answer therefore depends on the question specifying unclean animals.
