In Genesis, how many floors or levels did Noah’s Ark have?

The story behind the answer

Genesis instructs Noah to make the Ark with three decks or levels. Genesis 6:16 describes the vessel as having lower, second, and third stories, in addition to a door in its side and a window or opening near the top.

The three-level arrangement is one of the few internal structural details supplied by the biblical account. Genesis does not provide a deck plan, explain how the levels were connected, or assign particular animals or people to specific decks. Artistic depictions therefore vary considerably.

Translations differ slightly in how they render the Hebrew terms: some say “decks,” some say “stories,” and others say “levels.” Despite that wording variation, the count is three. The passage also describes the Ark’s overall dimensions as 300 cubits by 50 cubits by 30 cubits, but it does not state the exact height of each level.
