In Genesis, how many days does Noah wait before entering the Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah waits seven days before entering the Ark for the flood.

Genesis 7:4 records God telling Noah that the flood will come in seven days. Genesis 7:10 then says that after the seven days, the floodwaters came upon the earth. This waiting period occurs after Noah has received the instructions to build the Ark and gather the animals.

The seven-day interval is distinct from the forty days and forty nights of rain. It is also distinct from the 150 days during which the floodwaters prevail. Keeping these periods separate prevents a common misunderstanding of the narrative’s chronology.

Genesis gives the waiting period as part of a carefully staged sequence: Noah is warned, the animals enter, Noah and his family enter, the door is shut, and then the waters arrive. The account does not describe the seven days as a period Noah spends alone inside the completed Ark before the animals arrive.
