In Genesis, how many cubits high was Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark is described as 30 cubits high.

The height appears in Genesis 6:15 alongside the Ark’s length of 300 cubits and width of 50 cubits. The text also describes the vessel as having rooms, or compartments, and multiple levels. Genesis 6:16 refers to lower, second, and third decks, although translations differ in how they phrase some architectural details.

A cubit was an ancient length unit, probably related to the forearm, but its exact value was not identical everywhere. If one uses an approximate 45-centimetre cubit, 30 cubits would equal about 13.5 metres. That is an estimate, not a measurement supplied by the biblical narrative.

The Ark’s height should not be confused with the height of the Flood waters or the distance the waters rose above the mountains. Those are separate details in Genesis and are not used to define the vessel’s dimensions.
