In Genesis, how many cubits above the Ark was its window placed?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Ark’s window was placed one cubit above it. Genesis 6:16 describes the Ark’s design and says that Noah was to finish it to a cubit upward, traditionally understood as referring to the window or opening near the top.

The verse is difficult to interpret precisely because ancient Hebrew descriptions and modern translations differ in how they punctuate and render the building instructions. Some translations describe a window or opening made one cubit from the top, while others phrase the feature differently.

The same passage mentions the Ark’s decks, rooms, and a door in its side. These details portray a large enclosed structure with ventilation or light provided near the roof and access provided through the side.

The figure is not the Ark’s height. Genesis separately gives the vessel’s total height as 30 cubits, so one cubit refers to the window’s position in the construction description.
