In Genesis, how long was Noah’s Ark compared with its width?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark was six times as long as it was wide.

Genesis 6:15 gives the Ark’s dimensions as 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Dividing the length by the width produces a ratio of 6:1. The text gives proportions rather than a modern measurement system, because the exact length of a biblical cubit is uncertain.

This long, relatively narrow shape has attracted attention from naval historians and engineers. It resembles a large barge designed for stability and carrying capacity rather than a fast vessel intended for navigation.

The ratio is sometimes confused with the Ark’s height-to-width relationship, which was 30 to 50, or 3:5. Genesis does not provide a detailed hull design, steering system, or propulsion method.
