In Genesis, how long did Noah remain inside the Ark from the start of the Flood until leaving it?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah remained inside the Ark for about one year from the Flood’s beginning until he left it.

Genesis dates the start of the Flood to Noah’s six-hundredth year, on the seventeenth day of the second month. Noah leaves the Ark in the six-hundred-first year, on the twenty-seventh day of the second month. Read together, these dates describe roughly one solar year, though the exact interval depends on how the ancient calendar is reconstructed.

This is not the same as the forty days of rain mentioned earlier in the narrative. The rain stops, but the waters continue to prevail and recede over a much longer period. That distinction explains why the family stays aboard long after rainfall ends.

The chronology appears across Genesis 7 and 8 and is one of the account’s most detailed sequences of dates.
