In Genesis, after how many days does the Ark come to rest on the mountains?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, the Ark comes to rest after 150 days of prevailing floodwaters. Genesis 8:3–4 says the waters recede and that the Ark rests on the mountains of Ararat in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day.

The 150-day figure is part of the narrative’s chronological sequence and is not the same as the period during which rain falls. Genesis separately describes the rain, the rising waters, and the later recession of the Flood.

The phrase “mountains of Ararat” identifies a region rather than naming one universally agreed mountain peak. This distinction matters because later traditions and expeditions have often focused on Mount Ararat itself, while the biblical wording is broader.

After the Ark rests, Genesis continues to describe a long period before Noah leaves it. The landing therefore marks an important transition, not the immediate end of the story.
