Genesis 6:19 tells Noah to bring two of every kind of land animal onto the Ark.
The instruction specifies a male and a female so that living creatures can be preserved and reproduce afterward. This is the general animal-pair instruction in the first account of the ark’s passengers. The wording is often summarized as “two by two,” a phrase that has become closely associated with the story.
Genesis 7 adds a further instruction concerning animals considered clean: Noah is told to take more of these animals than of the others. Because of that later detail, a complete summary of the biblical account cannot reduce every animal category to exactly one pair.
The story’s “kind” is a biblical narrative category, not a modern biological species definition. It therefore cannot be converted directly into a modern count of species without adding assumptions the text does not provide.
