In Fantasia, which segment features Mickey Mouse as the sorcerer’s apprentice? It is “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”

The segment shows Mickey playing an apprentice to the stern magician Yen Sid. After borrowing his master’s enchanted hat, Mickey brings a broom to life and commands it to carry water. The broom obeys too well, flooding the workshop while Mickey struggles to stop the spell. Yen Sid eventually returns and restores order.

The sequence is animated to French composer Paul Dukas’s orchestral work The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, written in 1897 and inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 1797 poem “Der Zauberlehrling.” Disney originally planned it as an elaborate Mickey Mouse short, but its costs helped inspire the larger anthology film Fantasia.

The segment is often confused with Fantasia’s other famous musical sequences. “The Nutcracker Suite” features fairies, flowers, and mushrooms; “The Rite of Spring” depicts prehistoric life and dinosaurs; and “Night on Bald Mountain” centers on the demon Chernabog. Mickey’s magical mishap belongs only to “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” which also reappeared in Fantasia 2000.
