In F9: The Fast Saga, what car is launched into space?

Roman Pearce and Tej Parker use the modified Fiero as part of a plan to reach and destroy a satellite-based weapon. The sequence turns the franchise’s long-running reputation for extreme automotive stunts into an intentionally spectacular space-bound set piece.

The car is heavily modified for the mission, including rocket components and protective equipment. Roman and Tej wear improvised spacesuits, and the scene is played with the series’ characteristic combination of danger, comedy and exaggerated engineering.

The vehicle is often misremembered as a muscle car because the franchise is strongly associated with American performance cars. In F9, however, the space-bound vehicle is specifically a Pontiac Fiero, a mid-engine sports car produced by General Motors in the 1980s.
