Cache was created by FMPONE and Volcano and later rebuilt for Counter-Strike 2.
The original Cache was developed by Sal “Volcano” Garozzo and Shawn “FMPONE” Snelling. It became one of Global Offensive’s best-known competitive bomb-defusal maps and entered the official Active Duty map pool in 2014. Its setting used an industrial site associated with the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
Cache was notable for its clear lanes, recognizable middle area, and strong emphasis on rifle engagements. Unlike Valve’s internally developed maps, it had a prominent community-creator history. FMPONE later produced a visual and gameplay refresh, including a redesigned version shown at ESL One New York 2019.
Cache was not included in the initial Counter-Strike 2 map pool. Its creators instead worked on a Counter-Strike 2 rebuild, with the project expected to update visuals and technical presentation while preserving the map’s identity. Cache is sometimes confused with de_cache as if they were different maps; those names refer to the same map and its technical filename.
