In Counter-Strike 2, which grenade uses volumetric smoke that reacts to the environment?

The story behind the answer

In Counter-Strike 2, the smoke grenade produces volumetric smoke that reacts to the environment.

Counter-Strike 2 introduced a major redesign of smoke grenades. Instead of behaving only as a conventional static visual effect, the smoke occupies space, can expand through openings, and reacts to lighting and gameplay interactions. Bullets and explosions can briefly clear portions of the cloud, creating temporary sightlines.

This system changed how teams use familiar tactical positions. A smoke can block a doorway or crossing route, but its interaction with grenades and gunfire means that cover is no longer completely fixed for the entire duration. Players must therefore consider timing, angles, and the possibility of a short visual gap.

The smoke grenade should not be confused with the incendiary or high-explosive grenade. Those grenades affect fire or damage, while the smoke grenade’s primary tactical purpose is to obscure vision.
