In Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, which pirate captain becomes an Assassin after taking another man’s identity?

The story behind the answer

In Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Edward Kenway is the pirate captain who becomes an Assassin after taking another man’s identity.

Edward begins the game as a Welsh privateer motivated mainly by wealth and status. After killing the Assassin Duncan Walpole, Edward takes Walpole’s clothes and documents and travels to Havana, intending to sell information to the Templars. His deception draws him into the conflict between the Assassins and Templars, eventually changing his priorities.

Edward is the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, who appears in Assassin’s Creed III. This makes him part of one of the series’ most important family lines.

A common mix-up is confusing Edward with Edward’s son Haytham. Haytham becomes a Templar, while Edward joins the Assassin Brotherhood after the events of Black Flag. The game was released in 2013 and is set largely in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy.
