In acrobatic gymnastics, how many athletes perform in a men's group?

The story behind the answer

In acrobatic gymnastics, a men’s group consists of four athletes.

The formation is commonly called a men’s group or men’s fours. It normally uses a base, two middle partners and a top, allowing the athletes to build human pyramids, balances and dynamic throwing-and-catching skills. The group performs as a coordinated unit rather than as four independent gymnasts sharing an event.

Acrobatic gymnastics has five standard formations: women’s pairs, men’s pairs, mixed pairs, women’s groups and men’s groups. A women’s group has three athletes, while a men’s group has four. That difference is a frequent source of quiz mistakes, especially when people remember only that acrobatic gymnastics uses pairs and groups.

Routines combine balance, dynamic and combined exercises on a sprung floor, usually with music and choreography. Partners must match timing, body control and strength closely; a small error by one athlete can disrupt an entire pyramid or catch. The discipline is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique.
