Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline Coachella in 2018.
She headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, on April 14 and April 21, 2018. Her performance was widely called “Beychella” and featured a large marching-band and dance production inspired by historically Black colleges and universities.
The set included Destiny’s Child reunion appearances by Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, as well as guest appearances by Jay-Z and Solange. Beyoncé’s performance was later released as the concert film and live album Homecoming in 2019.
Coachella began in 1999 and is held at the Empire Polo Club. Beyoncé’s achievement was not simply being a headliner; she was specifically the festival’s first Black woman headliner, a distinction frequently omitted in shortened descriptions.
