How wide was Noah’s Ark in the dimensions recorded by Genesis?

The story behind the answer

In the dimensions recorded by Genesis, Noah’s Ark was 50 cubits wide.

Genesis 6:15 presents three measurements for the ark: 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. The width is therefore one-sixth of the stated length and five-thirds of the stated height. These proportions are among the clearest technical details in the biblical account.

Because the cubit was not a single standardized international unit, converting 50 cubits into meters requires an estimate. With a cubit of approximately 45 centimeters, the width would be about 22.5 meters, or 74 feet. Other proposed cubit lengths alter that figure.

The word “ark” can also mislead modern readers: the Genesis vessel is not described like a conventional sailing ship. The text emphasizes its construction, compartments, waterproofing, and capacity rather than navigation under human control.
