How tall are the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, including their spires?

The story behind the answer

Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers are 451.9 metres tall including their spires.

The identical twin skyscrapers were designed by Argentine architect César Pelli and completed in 1998. Their façades combine steel and glass with geometric forms inspired by Islamic architecture. The towers became the world’s tallest buildings by the official definition used at the time and held that title until Taipei 101 surpassed them in 2004.

The 451.9-metre measurement includes the decorative spires. It should not be confused with the height of the roof or with the position of the skybridge, which connects the towers at levels 41 and 42. Each tower has 88 above-ground floors.

The Petronas Towers remain a defining symbol of Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur. The skybridge is not a structural necessity joining the buildings into one tower; it is a separate connection designed to provide circulation and an emergency route between the two structures.
