How old was Noah when the floodwaters came upon the earth?

The story behind the answer

Noah was 600 years old when the floodwaters came upon the earth.

Genesis 7:6 gives Noah’s age as six hundred years when the flood began. The age appears within the detailed chronology of the flood narrative, which also identifies the month and day when the waters covered the earth. Noah’s advanced age is part of the unusually long lifespans attributed to several figures in the early chapters of Genesis.

Genesis later says that Noah lived 350 years after the flood and died at the age of 950. These figures belong to the biblical genealogy and chronology; they are not supported by independent historical records. They also differ from modern human life expectancy and should be understood within the literary and theological framework of the text.

Noah’s age at the flood is not the same as his age when he became the father of his sons. Genesis gives separate ages for those events, so summaries that combine them can create confusion.
