How much RAM did the original PlayStation contain?

The story behind the answer

The original PlayStation contained 2 MB of main RAM.

That memory was part of a hardware design built around a 32-bit RISC processor and a CD-ROM drive. The system also included separate memory resources for graphics and audio, so its total hardware memory was more than the main 2 MB figure alone.

Modern players sometimes compare this specification with the much larger memory capacities of contemporary consoles and computers. The PlayStation’s games were designed specifically around its fixed hardware limits, using streamed CD data, compressed assets, and carefully managed polygonal scenes.

The console’s memory should not be confused with a PlayStation memory card. Memory cards stored saved-game data externally and were removable accessories, whereas the 2 MB of RAM was built into the console and used while software was running.
