How many windows did Genesis say Noah’s Ark had?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says Noah’s Ark had one window.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make a window, or an opening, for the Ark and to finish it within a cubit of the top. English translations vary in how they render the underlying term, with some using “window,” “opening,” or a related expression, but the traditional count in the passage is one.

The verse also mentions a door in the side of the Ark and three levels. The window should not be confused with the Ark’s rooms or decks, nor with the many windows shown in modern paintings and films. Genesis gives a compact construction description rather than a complete architectural blueprint.
