How many tracks were on the original standard release of Metallica's self-titled album?

The story behind the answer

The original standard release of Metallica's self-titled album contained 12 tracks.

The sequence begins with “Enter Sandman” and ends with “The Struggle Within.” Other familiar songs in the 12-track program include “Sad but True,” “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” and “Wherever I May Roam.”

The album was issued on compact disc, cassette, and vinyl. On the original vinyl configuration, the 12 songs were divided across four sides: tracks 1–3 on Side A, 4–6 on Side B, 7–9 on Side C, and 10–12 on Side D.

Expanded editions can create confusion because later reissues add demos, live recordings, alternate versions, and other material. Those bonus tracks are not part of the original standard album count, which remains 12 songs.
