How many total decks did Genesis describe for Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis describes Noah’s Ark as having three decks.

Genesis 6:16 instructs Noah to make the Ark with lower, second, and third decks. The verse also mentions an opening or window and a door in the side, but it does not provide a modern architectural plan showing how the interior was arranged.

The three-level description fits the story’s emphasis on housing Noah’s family, animals, and stored food within one large vessel. The biblical dimensions are given in cubits, while the deck arrangement is presented as a simple textual specification rather than a detailed construction blueprint.

Artists and modern replica builders have therefore created different interior layouts. Those reconstructions should not be mistaken for details explicitly supplied by Genesis. The number of decks, however, is stated directly in the passage.
