Metallica’s The Black Album contains 12 standard tracks. The sequence begins with “Enter Sandman” and ends with “The Struggle Within.”
The album’s core track list includes major singles such as “The Unforgiven,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Wherever I May Roam,” and “Sad but True.” It also includes album cuts including “Holier Than Thou,” “Through the Never,” and “My Friend of Misery.”
The standard edition was arranged across four vinyl sides, with three tracks on each side. A Japanese edition added “So What,” a cover of a song by Anti-Nowhere League, as a bonus track; that extra song is not part of the standard 12-track sequence.
The compact track count reflects the band’s move away from the very long, intricate structures associated with ...And Justice for All. Even with 12 songs, the record’s total running time exceeded an hour, giving the release a substantial album-length feel.
