How many sports were contested at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympics?

The story behind the answer

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympics contested 22 sports.

Although called Tokyo 2020, the Games were held from 24 August to 5 September 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic caused a one-year postponement. The programme included established Paralympic sports such as swimming, athletics, wheelchair basketball and goalball.

The Tokyo programme also featured two sports making their Paralympic debuts: badminton and taekwondo. Their inclusion expanded the range of events available to eligible athletes and added new medal competitions to the Summer Games.

The number of sports is not the same as the number of events or medal contests. A single sport can contain many disciplines, classes, distances or weight categories. Tokyo’s 22-sport programme therefore represented a much larger schedule of individual competitions.
